Enjoying Karelia

Sailing Karelia
  • Abandoned vintage WWll iron ore docks at the turn into the channel to the Superior entry on our way out to sea.
  • This is Sheila as we pass an ore dock in the shipping channel of Superior.
  • Leaving the Superior Entry on Karelia's maiden voyage. This is the Superior entry light.
  • The crew of the first trip. On the left, Rose VanVreede, Lauren Nelson and Maryann Vukich, Sheila, brother-in-law Ed, sister Joanne and forward of the helm is Joe Stone.
  • Some kind of pleased guy.
  • On an early trip to the Apostle Islands the GPS has us two miles from Sand Island, and a little to the left of course. I guess the photographer left the helm to its own, allowing the boat veer off even more for the moment. (The thin line indicating the current heading.)
  • Under full sail on a favorable wind.
  • A relaxed skipper with the boat at achor off the sea caves of Sand Island in the Apostle Islands.
  • The sand Island Sea caves. We took turns in the dingy rowing to the caves and exporing the grottos.
  • In about 20 ft. of very clear water you can see the anchor and the chain tracking the wanderings of the boat. The dark object at the bottom of the picture is the reflection of the bow pulpit and the photographer.
  • Weather exposed the roots of a windfall. A series of visitors deposited these rocks for fun and art.
  • This is the Sand Island light.
  • Sand Island light sign post.
  • Karelia seen in the Sand Island bay with the sea caves beyond.
  • Sheila looking a bit cold as we pass by Big Island.
  • On a later trip we sailed with my niece Joy Benn, son Scott and Sheila.
  • Joy is having a joy.
  • Son Scott at the helm while I enjoy the ride. Who looks concerned?
  • Now who looks concerned and who is having fun?
  • Using bosons chair and a halyard we raised Sheila's nephew, Les Olson, to the top of Karelia's 53' mast to clear a fouled line. He snapped this photo looking northwest.
  • On a trip to Two Harbors we were accompanied by neighbors Jim and Jill Huber.
  • This was our summer home, slip G-11 barkers Island Marina, Superior WI. until we sold her in May of 2006.
  • This is the definitive photo of Karelia. It was photographed by Scott Munson, the parts manager at Barker's Island Marina, on Karelia's first outing. This is the last slide in the Karelia series. Click here to go back to the main home page .
